And the Si-Symposium was a Great Success!

Dr. Farooq Ahmed, (CSL Silicones, Senior- Scientific Research Chemist) presented a paper titled Elastomeric Polysiloxane Coatings, at the Silicon Symposium recently held May 29-31st, 2018 in Edmonton, Alberta., in conjunction with the 101st Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition.

The 49th Si-Symposium celebrated the insightful and ground-breaking chemistry of Bob West, (E.G. Rochow Professor of Chemistry Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison: Director of the Organosilicon Research Center), in a year where he turns 90 years of age. It is truly hard to imagine that there is a silicon, or indeed group silicone chemists working today which has not been influenced by Bob’s pioneering silicone chemistry work efforts.

Dr. Bob West is best known for his ground-breaking research in silicon chemistry, as well as his work with oxocarbons and organolithium compounds. West most well-known discovery, amongst numerous others, was the synthesis of the first ever silicon-silicon double bond in 1981, a feat which broke the so-called ‘double-bond’ rule’, which stated that main group elements below row two of the periodic table could not form double bonds

The focused Symposium successfully brought together approximately 180-200 silicone scientists from around the globe, including world-leading academic and industrial researchers, postdoctoral fellows and research students.
